La Trinidad, Benguet -- The Department of Science and Technology- Cordillera Administrative Region (DOST-CAR) granted more than PhP9.2 Million to upgrade twelve (!2) firms in Mountain Province, Ifugao, Benguet and Apayao through the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) after the Memoranda of Agreement were signed recently.

 

From the twelve business firms, three (3) are from Ifugao province namely Butoeg Enterprises from Alfonso Lista, and JMD Farm and Glorietta’s Sewing Shop, both from the municipality of Lamut.

 

Further, there are (4) four from Mountain Province namely Pilcorp Construction Services in Bauko, Chamtong Printing Services in Sabangan, Sagada Homemade Whole Wheat Bread House in Sagada, and Ebays Lodging also from Sagada.

 

More than PhP3 Million will also fund the upgrading of three (3) firms in Baguio-Benguet and two (2) firms in Apayao. The firms are Grae’s Souvenir Trading in Sablan, and Chilli Queens and You’re Invited Desktop Publishing and General Merchandise in Baguio City; and the Oandasan Poultry Farms and Moontreats Food Products in Apayao.

 

The fund assistance will be used to acquire additional machineries in order to increase the production and enhance product quality of the firms. Aside from financial assistance, the DOST-CAR through its provincial offices will also provide technical services like Packaging and Labeling of products, laboratory analyses for food businesses, and technical consultancies in order to ensure safety of products being produced.         

 

SETUP is a nationwide strategy that encourages and assists the micro, small and medium enterprises to adopt technological innovations that will help them increase their productivity and competitiveness as these MSMEs are recognized as substantial contributors to spur inclusive growth and economic development of the country.

 

The program focuses on MSMEs belonging to food processing, metals and engineering, furniture, agriculture, gifts, decors and handicrafts, health and wellness products, Information and Communications Technology (ICT), Halal products and services, and other regional industry priorities.//FAA

 

The SEARCH, an abbreviation for Systematic Exploration of Available Research and Development Institutions (RDIs) in the Cordillera Highlands, is an information management system for research and development institutions in the Cordillera Administrative Region.

 

The system aims to facilitate the management of information on researches, researchers, institutions, Intellectual Properties and patents, and R&D facilities in the region.

 

The Regional Research Development Innovation Committee through the DOST-CAR, conceptualized the development of the system and was launched by DOST Secretary Fortunato T. Dela Peña in November 2019 during the RSTW in CAR celebration at Bontoc, Mountain Province.

 

As a follow through, the DOST-CAR facilitated a user's training on February 21, 2020 for the deployment and population of the said system.

 

The DOST-CAR Regional Director, Dr. Nancy A. Bantog said that the SEARCH will aid researchers as their reference to avoid duplication of researches and will serve as an enabling strategy for researchers to collaborate and to maximize resources/facilities that are available in other research institutions in the region.

 

 

Likewise, Dr. Jimmy Catanes of the Commision on Higher Education said this will aid for easier monitoring and strenghtening the research capabilities in the region.

 

Moreover, Engr. Nathaniel Vincent Lubrica of the University of the Cordilleras, and a member of RRDIC facilitated the crafting of SEARCH guidelines that will ensure an accreditation of worthy research resource database with quality and integrity.

 

DOST hopes that RDIs will populate the system for the successful realization of its uses.//cgd
