 The Department of Science and Technology-CAR in partnership with the Department of Education-CAR signed the Memorandum of Agreement for the implementation of the project entitled “Support to Science and Technology Education in CAR through the STARBOOKS Digital Library” on June 17, 2015 at the Provincial Science and Technology Center-Benguet Conference Room. Present during the MOA signing were Dr. Julius Caesar V. Sicat, Regional Director of DOST-CAR; Dr. Estela L. Cariño, Assistant Regional Director of DEPED-CAR and representing Dr. Ellen B. Donato, Regional Director of DEPED. Likewise, Dr. Nancy A. Bantog, ARD for Technical Services, DOST-CAR and Dr. Ethielyn E. Taqued, EPSC, DEPED-CAR completed the roster of signatories in the MOA.

A total of 159 high school students from CAR qualified for the DOST-Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) Scholarship for SY 2015-2016 under the RA 7687 scholarship program otherwise known as the S&T Scholarship Act of 1994 which provides scholarship privileges to talented and deserving students whose families’ socio-economic status does not exceed the set cut-off values of certain indicators. There was a 15% increase in the number of passers from 2014 to 2015 with 138 total passers in 2014.

Of the 159 qualifiers this CY2015, almost all municipalities in the Cordillera Region are represented. For the province of Abra, 19 of the 27 municipalities have passers; in Apayao, Benguet (including Baguio City), and Ifugao, all municipalities are represented; for Ifugao, 9 of 11 municipalities and Mountain Province, 9 out of 10 municipalities have qualifiers. Similarly, Baguio City has the most qualifiers at 41; followed by Benguet (31); Abra (25); Mountain Province (20); Kalinga (19); Apayao (13); and Ifugao (10).
