DOST-CAR SETUP adoptor, Tawid Silver ranked 2nd in the Interlinked Festival

In celebration of Baguio City’s UN award of Creative city of Crafts and Folk Arts, the Ibag-iw annual November festival ran its course with two major activities: The Interlinked Exhibit and the BACCI - sponsored (Baguio Arts and Crafts and Collective Inc.) multi-sector competition, both held at the Baguio Convention Center Artists and artisans competed under the categories of Metal Crafts, Basketry, Weaving and Wood Carving.

Tawid Crafts Corporation (using the brand name TAWID SILVER), a DOST-CAR SETUP co-operator, won 2^nd Prize for its jewelry piece entry, with the 1^st prize going to sculpture.

TAWID SILVER’s winning piece was a sterling silver neckpiece inspired by the Cordillera symbol of fertility and prosperity, the lingling-o. The challenge to the designer was how to integrate exquisite quality and global competitiveness with the competition guidelines to showcase Cordillera culture and contribute to economic sustainability among others.

The entry piece was created using an electric rolling mill which was acquired through the DOST-CAR SETUP assistance. With the machine, the piece’s lead tie in preparation was shortened, helping them to beat the deadline and top quality finish was achieved.

While it was the firm’s first time to join the IBAGIW Arts and Crafts Competition, it is delighted to have bagged the award which gained scores in the craftsmanship and skills employed, artistry and aesthetics, innovation, scalability and cost efficiency, and audience vote.

Moreover, through the creativity, innovative ideas, coupled with the technology interventions of DOST-CAR SETUP, the firm diversified and improved its jewelry product to sterling silver tableware.

The firm continues to support local employment while portraying craftsmanship and beauty of arts through their crafts by joining the local bazaar, the “Mandeko Kito” artisans fair, held last July and the second leg held last November.

The firm is open to taking orders to reproduce the same design which has a pending patent at the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines.

9 international STEM competitors in CAR receive YES Awards

Through the Department of Science and Technology- Cordillera Administrative Region (DOST-CAR), a total of nine (9) Youth Excellence in Science (YES) awardees from the region received their medals during the virtual awarding on November 9, 2020, held via Zoom App.

The awardees were composed of eight high school (8) students from the Philippine Science High School- Cordillera Administrative Region Campus (PSHS-CARC) in Baguio City namely: Aldred Alvarado, Vash Patrick Ancheta, Viany Rhese Calaunan, Alaric Justin Conlu, Cris Magdalene Dela Cruz, Iustus Maximus Nas, Alphonsus Rouis Nonog, and Gabrielle Andrei Rico who were able to bag international bronze and silver awards last year. Meanwhile, Meljon Viste from Abra High School (AHS) in the Province of Abra also bagged silver and bronze awards after joining two (2) international competitions last year.

“The Youth Excellence in Science Award or the YES Award is a simple recognition of the highest degree for the youths’ exemplary achievements in the fields of science and mathematics. By being a recipient of the YES Medal, the Philippines, through the Department of Science and Technology, regards your efforts as a value in the nation’s quest for excellence and your names shall be included in the roster of honorable men and women of science”, underscored by the Regional Director of DOST-CAR, Dr. Nancy A. Bantog as she expressed her congratulatory note to the awardees.

Meanwhile, Dr. Conrado C. Rotor, the Campus Director of the PSHS- CARC encouraged the awardees to excel more as he reminded that success is not measured by the number of medals received, rather it is the achieved long-term meaningful goals thru passion and perseverance.

The YES Awards is conducted annually through the DOST-Science Education Institute (SEI) in recognition to young achievers in international science and mathematics competitions. This also aims to further motivate and inspire the youth to strive for excellence in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).//FLAA   

DOST-CAR holds nationwide Capacity Building Training Program for DOST-ROs

The important role of the DOST regional offices is increasingly recognized in influencing the research and development landscape of the country. Various initiatives and investments have already been undertaken by DOST Regional Offices such as actively promoting and implementing programs to beef up the local R&D activities in their respective regions in support of the DOST Secretary’s marching order “Science for the People” particularly the implementation of the Science for Change Program.

Among its programs is the establishment of the Regional Research, Development, and Innovation Council (RRDIC), which is mandated to coordinate and provide strategic policy directions and harmony on major R&D activities in the region, and to address gaps in R&D which are not currently covered by the existing R&D consortia. Several regional offices are also the Secretariat for the R&D consortia of DOST-PCIEERD and DOST-PCHRD.

For this reason, a nationwide virtual training program titled Capacity Building Programs on RDI for DOST Regional Offices was successfully conducted by DOST-CAR and DOST-MIMAROPA through DOST-Human Resource Development Program which started on September 1, 2020 and culminated on October 7, 2020.

This virtual training program was divided into 16 sessions - Luzon Regions schedule for AM Session and Visayas and Mindanao for PM Session.

The program kicked-off with a warm Welcome Message from DOST CAR Regional Director, Dr. Nancy A. Bantog, followed by an engaging Opening Remarks from Usec. Brenda L. Nazareth-Manzano, Undersecretary for Regional Operations, and meaningful Inspirational Message from DOST Secretary Fortunato T. dela Peña wherein he emphasized the need to strengthen collaborative research and development in the region.

The program sessions engaged competent resource speakers from different sectors. From the DOST Councils, Ms. Grace F. Estillore of DOST- PCIEERD, Dr. Lilian G. Bondoc of DOST- PCAARRD, and Mr. Vincent H. Tumlos of DOST- PCHRD; from University of the Philippines – Diliman, Dr. Luis G. Sison; from Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP), Mr. Adrian Ramirez and Ms. Leanne Kym Jane Lozañes; and from The Institutes for Research, Innovation and Scholarship (IRIS)– include Dr. Napoleon K. Juanillo, Jr., Dr. Carlos Primo C. David, Dr. Isagani Padolina, Dr. Joanna Padolina, Dr. Raymond Girard Tan, Dr. Gonzalo Serafica, Dr. Eva Marie Cutiongco-De La Paz, Dr. Alex Brillantes, and Dr. Jinky Bornales.

The interactive sessions were filled with learnings which capacitated regional offices in implementing research, development, and innovation activities, particularly enabling the regions to identify R&D gaps needed thereby effectively prioritizing R&D implementation to address these gaps, and improve the skills of the regional staff in facilitating ideation activities.
